Tech Soft 3D adds Theorem to its portfolio

Jun 5, 2024 | Hot Topics

Tech Soft 3D just announced that it’s buying Theorem Solutions, makers of advanced CAD data translators and publishing tools. I’m most recently aware of their Theorem XR, which builds on their 30 years of repurposing 3D data via translators and publishing tools. At a recent shipbuilding industry event, Theorem said they had been working on eXtended Reality (XR) Experiences that enable designers, engineers, builders, and owners to collaborate via Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality Experiences.

Ron Fritz, CEO of Tech Soft 3D, said, “We have long admired and appreciated Theorem’s deep expertise in CAD data exchange and have had a chance to work closely with the team as they created their solutions. This acquisition not only makes Tech Soft 3D a one-stop shop for the most comprehensive set of CAD data translation and publishing solutions, and is also in line with our vision of helping users, developers and enterprises leverage the full value of their 3D data.”

It sounds as though this is a done deal and that all/most of the Theorem team will join Tech Soft 3D. The press release says that “[t]he Tech Soft 3D organization will continue to be focused on providing core intellectual property to developers, while the Theorem team will continue to focus on delivering products directly to industrial end-users … Theorem’s CADTranslate and CADPublish products complement Tech Soft 3D’s HOOPS Exchange and HOOPS Publish software developer toolkits (SDKs), and creates an ecosystem of data translation, publishing and 3D PDF solutions for end-users and developers alike. Additionally, Theorem XR solutions provide capabilities for manufacturers to use their 3D CAD data in extended reality (XR) applications for numerous manufacturing use cases, such as design review, factory layout and more.”

Interestingly (but I guess not surprising), Mark Stowe, the CEO of Theorem, said, “Theorem has built products on top of core component technologies from Tech Soft 3D, so we know the teams are compatible and our technologies complementary. We also know that we share a vision of how to extend the value of 3D data for manufacturing enterprises and their supply chains. We’re extremely excited about what we can achieve together.”

And, important for Theorem’s customers: the press release said that Tech Soft 3D will maintain and support current Theorem CADTranslate, CADPublish and TheoremXR users.

As seems typical these days, details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

My take? It’s challenging to go it alone these days, and combining resources (especially with the backing of deep-pockets Battery Ventures) will give access to more customers and geographies and perhaps new use cases.
