Quickie: DS acquires elecworks

Feb 11, 2019 | Hot Topics

Dassault Systèmes said today that it will acquire Trace Software’s elecworks electrical and automation design software product line in an asset transfer. Trace has been a SolidWorks applications partner since 1997; in 2012, Trace became a strategic partner so that the companies could integrate and sell elecworks under the SOLIDWORKS Electrical brand.

DS says that. by acquiring the IP, it will create an “integrated mechatronics solution on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to help SOLIDWORKS customers address electrical design challenges in the development of smart products”.

In the deal, DS will acquire 100% of the elecworks electrical design and automation product line and intellectual property. that includes a huge library of electrical symbols and manufacturer data for commonly-used electrical components. In addition, 21 elecworks software developers, technical support engineers and quality assurance engineers will join DS.

I looked up the definition of “asset transfer” and it appears that it’s a move of ownership from one entity to another, where there may not be funds moving in the other direction. I’ve inquired with DS about the financial aspects and I’ll update if I learn anything more.

The asset transfer is expected to close in March 2019.
