Bentley ramps up utility pole management offering with SPIDA acquisition

Jun 14, 2021 | Hot Topics

You may know that, over the years, I’ve judged various categories for Bentley’s Year in Infrastructure Awards and learned so much in the process. One year, an entry was all about utility poles — we drive by them, rely on them without thinking about them unless there’s a lineman actually up there. Then we admire their bravery. But the poles themselves are just part of the landscape. But in judging that entry, I learned that these poles are important assets that must be monitored, managed, and optimized like any others.

Today, Bentley announced that it is acquiring SPIDA Software, developers of software for modeling, simulation, and data management for electric and communications utility pole networks. Bentley says SPIDAcalc, for capturing, modeling, and optimizing overhead transmission and distribution assets for structural loading; SPIDAsilk, for analyzing cable sag and tension design; and SPIDAstudio, a cloud platform for tracking and managing the health and physical condition of overhead systems will be integrated with Bentleys OpenUtilities offering to “address the challenges … of joint usage of utility poles to support broadband networks’ 5G expansion, and of modernizing and hardening the electric grid to maintain reliability and resilience”.

No financial details were released, but Bentley said that the acquisition is not material to its financial results.
