One of the questions I get most often from designers and their managers is how to do it all: be a good designer, work like a CAD rock star, and learn simulation. It’s a lot to ask of one person and we always wind up talking about how to shift work around to take advantage of expertise already in-house.
Over the years, I’ve come up with what I call the “value pyramid”. I don’t mean to imply that any one task is more or less valuable than another; we need to do them all to get to the end-result. But most tasks fall into either a routine or crisis bucket, with crisis tasks always seeming more valuable. But it’s the routine ones actually make a project successful.
